‘Practical Food Safety: Contemporary Issues and Future Directions’ takes a multi-faceted approach to food safety, covering microbiological and chemical issues aiming to foster better preparation for future food safety problems.
Chapter 7, ‘Achieving Quality Chemical Measurements in Foods’ by Yiu-chung Wong and Michael Walker, covers international harmonisation of quality assurance protocols for laboratories and metrology in chemistry, accurate chemical measurement through the implementation of traceability, comparability and assessing measurement uncertainty, along with practical advice on these topics.
Chapter 8, ‘Protection of the Agri-Food Chain by Chemical Analysis: The European Context’ by Michael Walker and Yiu-chung Wong, covers the objectives and basis of European food and feed law and how it works in day-to-day regulation in the United Kingdom. This was illustrated with EU legislation and typical analysis for contaminants, veterinary residues, and aluminium in imported noodles. The chapter also describes referee analysis in the UK and gives advice for countries wishing to export to the EU.
Michael Walker said, “We have undertaken a fair bit of collaboration with the Government Laboratory of Hong Kong SAR recently, and we all know that harmonisation and protection of the increasingly-global food chain is vital. It is my hope that these two chapters and the international reach of the book will contribute to better understanding and avoidance of disputes in the agrifood sector.”
